Overview
This education is designed to cover the complexities of opioid safety, ethical considerations in prescribing, and evolving regulations. Learners will gain insights into risk mitigation strategies, DEA prescribing updates, and ethical challenges of managing opioid therapy. Designed to support informed, patient-centered decision-making, this education will equip learners with the knowledge and competence to navigate controlled substance prescribing responsibly.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Summarize the data on opioid safety focused reductions in opioid prescribing.
  2. Describe the roles of payors, health systems, and government in rigid implementation of opioid metrics and their impact on patient care.
  3. Discuss recent evidence of forced opioid discontinuations.
  4. Discuss ethics and implications of nonconsensual opioid tapers/discontinuations.
  5. Identify and incorporate risk mitigation strategies for controlled substances.
  6. Recognize DEA rules for telemedicine prescribing of controlled substances.

Ascension Saint Thomas is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

This activity is designed to offer 2 hours of continuing education applicable to the 8-hour DEA Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act requirements, and will meet the Tennessee Department of Health’s licensure renewal requirements for 2.0 hours of continuing education in controlled substance prescribing, including chronic pain guidelines.
