Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify appropriate patients for VV vs VA ECMO.
  2. Recognize respiratory failure and cardiogenic shock earlier with a goal of reducing delays in escalation of care for cardiogenic shock patients.
  3. Develop strategies to minimize complications on temporary mechanical support.
  4. Develop strategies for the management of the ECMO patient.
  5. Develop strategies to improve discharge medication reconciliation.
  6. Improve communication among team members for handoff.
  7. Implement enhanced collaboration among the multidisciplinary and interprofessional healthcare team members to manage ECMO patients appropriately and promote a team approach to cardiogenic shock.
  8. Implement guideline directed management of shock.
  9. Implement enhanced cannulation techniques.
  10. Implement appropriate shock therapies when indicated.
